Little drawingsBIG imaginationsA whole lot of love

The very real beginning

She drew them.
She named them.
Now, meet them.

Daddy. Tilly. Mummy. Winky. Four little characters, all different, all dreamt up by Kiara.

Her family helped turn those original drawings into a cosy bedtime adventure. The Wonky Potato Family is the first world on this drawing board.

Illustrations drawn and character names dreamt up by Kiara Dorothy Coughlan, aged 3.

Start with a scribble…
Kiara’s original drawing board
Six original drawings by Kiara, including Daddy, Tilly, Mummy, Winky, the Wonky House and the Three Trunk Tree.

Little marks. A family waiting to happen.

At the heart of Kiara’s growing story world

Little adventures.
Messages that matter.

Designed for grown-up-supported storytime and play, with opportunities to explore feelings, language, imagination and problem-solving.

For little minds. And the grown-ups who love them.

Kindness & belonging

A place to be yourself.

Different shapes, different ideas and a warm welcome. The stories celebrate being valued for who you are and making room for others.

Understanding feelings

Little people have big feelings.

Excitement, disappointment and those little wobbly moments deserve understanding and care. There’s room for them in a loving adventure.

Imagination & curiosity

A little “what if?” goes a long way.

A scribble can become a character. A small idea can open a whole new world. Curiosity and creative thinking are welcome here.

Trying & helping

There’s another way to try.

Plans can change. Sharing an idea, asking for help and finding another way are all part of the adventure.

A story to enjoy together. A message to carry into everyday life.
Start with The Very Wonky Den, the first adventure from Kiara’s imagination.

Little invitations. Plenty of ways to join in.

Follow your child’s interest, energy and ways of communicating. Ages are a starting point, not a test: choose one idea, change it, repeat a favourite or simply enjoy the story together.

Start small, or stretch an idea.

A simpler invitation, often useful around 3–4: point to a character, name a feeling together, choose a cushion colour or try one drawing mark.

An optional stretch, often useful around 5–6: predict what might happen, put three story moments in order or explain why the family changed its den plan.

Talk, notice, wonder.

Try “What might happen next?” or “What helped Tilly?” Count a few cushions together, make a red–blue–red–blue pattern, or play with a silly rhyme such as “den” and “hen”. Take turns adding one idea to your own story.

Offer a comment as well as a question. Leave thinking time; no answer is needed to keep reading.

Every way of joining in counts.

Use your home language or mix languages. Words, pointing, gestures, communication boards or AAC all belong. Offer chunky crayons, adapted tools, a grown-up drawing the child’s idea, or a paper alternative to the on-screen drawing board.

Make room for every feeling.

A “Yay!”, giggle or sad “Ooooh” can be fun when a child wants to join in. A quiet look, gesture or pause is welcome too. Children never need to copy a face, smile, make a sound or explain a feeling.

After PLOOF, offer comfort and time before another idea. Keep pretend den-building grown-up-led and choose activities that suit your family.

For parents and educators: the guidance behind our approach

We reviewed selected principles from CDC age-three milestones, age-four milestones and age-five milestones; NAEYC’s developmentally appropriate practice; the AAP’s 2024 shared-reading policy; and England’s Development Matters.

This is our own content review, not approval or endorsement by those organisations. CDC milestones describe development through age five; they are not an assessment of this pack. Our activities offer opportunities to explore selected skills, rather than a complete curriculum or a promise of particular outcomes.
